How much does the appraisal of my collection at Auction Galleries cost?

The appraisal of your collection is part of our service; there are no additional costs for our consignors.

How does the auction process at Auction Galleries work?

Four times a year, we hold public auctions in our own premises in accordance with the German Ordinance on Commercial Auctions (Versteigerungsverordnung – VerstV). High-quality auction catalogs are printed and sent to thousands of interested parties worldwide. Admission is free, and you are warmly invited to attend the auction of your lots in person. The items remain your property until sold.

How are the starting prices determined at Auction Galleries?

Our team of philatelic experts has many years of experience and a high level of expertise in evaluating collections and individual items, and is familiar with the current market situation. We divide your consignment in such a way as to achieve the best possible result from our point of view. For exceptional pieces, inclusion in the single-lot section can be arranged with our philatelists.

Is my consignment insured at Auction Galleries?

When we accept your consignment, we issue a receipt confirming both receipt and the determined insurance value.

Can buyers inspect the items beforehand?

Before each auction, our clients can thoroughly view all auction lots/items on our premises. In addition, all single lots and collections are partially illustrated on the internet.

How much does Auction Galleries charge for its service?

Depending on the value of your consignment, we agree on a commission rate with you, which is usually 25%—and only for sold lots. There are no additional costs such as VAT or similar.

When will I receive the payment for my proceeds?

After the auction, our customers have four weeks to purchase unsold lots/items in the post-auction sale with a 10% lower offer. After this period, the accounting and payment of proceeds take place in the following weeks.

What happens if a lot/item remains unsold?

You can decide whether you would like to take it back or have us offer it again in the next auction at a reduced starting price. Normally, we reduce the price by 20%, but it has proven particularly successful to halve the starting price for the second run. For this, we have a special section called “Liquidation Lots,” which attracts special attention from our customers, often achieving or even exceeding the original starting price.

Why should I consign to Auction Galleries?

Auction Galleries has its roots in the family business Schwanke GmbH, which has built an excellent reputation over more than 40 years and, through the acquisition of the Gärtner Group, has now become Germany’s largest stamp auction house. Our good name, expertise, and loyal clientele ensure the success of your valuables.

Does Auction Galleries also buy directly?

For suitable items, we are happy to act as direct buyers of any amount.
